## Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that causes the **bones to become fragile, thin, and weak**.

- Changes in the quality and strength make bones **more likely to break or fracture**
- Osteoporosis is more common in women and people **over the age of 50 year**
- Osteoporosis is **often not diagnosed until a fracture occurs**

It is uncommon for osteoporosis-related fractures to be isolated incidents.

Patients who suffer a minimal fracture due to Osteoporosis, have a **significantly greater risk of having another fracture and most will** experience this within 4 years of their first fracture.

The **likelihood is 147 in the first year** and **1–21 within 2 years**.
